Anxiety and depression in Acid Peptic diseases
- Dr. Hemant Belsare

Introduction:

Acid peptic diseases are one of the most distressing and commonly seen problems by practicing clinicians. Acid peptic diseases occur due to imbalance in acid and pepsin secretion and include peptic ulcer, gastritis, and Z-E syndrome. Peptic ulcer is the commonest of acid peptic diseases because pepsin was thought to be responsible for the pain in the abdomen which used to progress up to ulcer formation. Hence the name Peptic Ulcer. Later on the fact came to light that it is the hydrochloric acid that is responsible and therefore the terms like Acidity, Hyperacidity came into usage.

Acid peptic disease is a chronic condition causing pain and heartburn. This prolonged duration of physical discomfort is frequently associated with anxiety and depression. And many times the reverse is the case.
