Zolpidem In The Elderly
 

Patient : 72 year old male patient

Case History

72 year old male patient came with chief complaints of insomnia for the last 3 weeks. The patient complained of difficulty in falling asleep as well as the decreased duration of sleep.

Examination Findings

General examination: The patient's BP was 140/90mmHg. The other vital parameters were within normal limits.

The systemic examination of the cardiovascular system, central nervous system, respiratory system and alimentary system did not reveal any abnormalities.

Treatment

The patient being elderly was prescribed Tab. Zolpidem at a dose of 5mg per day at bedtime. The patient was asked to follow up after 30 days.

Follow up

The patient followed up for examination after 30 days. The patient was very happy with the treatment. He could not only fall asleep but also sleep for the duration of the night. The examination of the vital systems did not reveal any abnormalities. The treatment with Zolpidem was continued for more than 6 months. After Zolpidem was stopped the patient did not have either rebound insomnia or any alteration of the sleep pattern. The patient also did not show evidence of dependence of Zolpidem.
